U.S. Backs Independence of Iraqi Government

(MENAFN) America's top diplomat in Baghdad delivered a stern warning Thursday that Iraq's incoming government "should remain fully independent" while prioritizing all citizens' national interests, the US Embassy disclosed.

Joshua Harris, US Charge d'Affaires, declared "We are prepared to use the full range of tools to counter Iran's destabilizing activities in Iraq" during Wednesday talks with Abdul Hussein Al-Musawi, leader of the National Approach Alliance, according to embassy documentation.

The diplomatic exchange emphasized Washington's vision for robust bilateral cooperation "that delivers tangible benefits for Americans and Iraqis as we work to advance our shared interests, safeguarding Iraqi sovereignty, bolstering regional stability, and strengthening economic ties."

Washington has publicly rejected Nouri al-Maliki's candidacy for prime minister, with President Donald Trump threatening to sever Iraqi support should the State of Law Coalition chief reclaim power.

The Coordination Framework—Iraq's dominant Shiite political bloc—nominated al-Maliki for the premiership following 2025's parliamentary elections, despite Trump's ultimatum.

Undeterred by American pressure, the Coordination Framework stands firm behind al-Maliki, who condemned Washington's position as "blatant interference" in domestic Iraqi politics.

Al-Maliki held Iraq's top executive post across two consecutive terms from 2006 through 2014, when Haider al-Abadi assumed leadership.

His administration confronted severe security crises, most notably ISIS (Daesh) territorial expansion that consumed nearly one-third of Iraqi land before Baghdad's 2017 victory declaration.

Iraqi voters cast ballots in November 11, 2025 parliamentary elections, achieving 56.11% turnout. Newly elected legislators hold constitutional authority to select the president and approve governmental formation.
